Mars: How would you like to take a trip to Mars in only 3 days tops?
What used to be science fiction is now becoming closer and closer to science fact. A physics professor at the University of California named Philip Lubin is figuring out just that.. His team plans to eventually put a laser into Earth’s orbit to create photon pressure to power a sail-equipped spacecraft. This technique would be used to propel a 220 lb craft to Mars in three days. The larger the craft, the longer it will take, as it would require more energy and “thrust” to make the same trip. With this technology they hope to one day accelerate crafts up to the speed of light, allowing us to visit our potentially inhabitable neighbor planets only 25 light years away!
